“I feel like Toy Story 2 did this fairly cleverly allowing them to keep all the character development while also bringing back a popular dynamic. It was clear that a lot of the fun of Buzz is when he doesn’t think he’s a toy and is instead a self-serious space ranger out of context but his character learned and embraced what he was in the first film.
The second film gets that element back by having us spend the middle portion with a different buzz who still thinks he’s a space ranger.
…the third film tried a different angle with Spanish-language/factory reset Buzz and the fourth film pushed him into more of a support role.”
