When it comes to determining if a film is successful, it all depends on that first opening weekend. That’s when theatres make all of their cash, and studios and producers can see if their film will end up making enough of a profit to make it worthwhile.
Generally, the rule of thumb is that a film needs to make between 2-3 times its production budget to be considered a success (as the budget doesn’t include print and advertising dollars, which can be as much as the production itself), and studio’s would love it if a lot of that money came from domestic sources. Recently, Shia LaBeouf’s latest film Man Down was in the media for selling only one ticket in the UK, which got us thinking if any other films have made a tiny impact at the Box Office.
Turns out, there’s a handful that have delivered back some sad revenues.
