The Science of Scare Project was founded in 2020 to do one thing: find the scariest movie in existence. They strategically expose their audience to a variety of movies and measure their given heart rate during each viewing.
They first ran the Science of Scare Project in 2020 and are back in 2021. They borrowed movie recommendations from critics, past lists and Reddit users to compile a list of 40 films. 250 viewers were then hooked up to heart rate monitors and watched these movies in “screaming rooms” while under the supervision of medical and research professionals.
The process is quite simple. Note how much each movie changes their audience’s heart rate compared to the resting average of 64 BPM.
