I grew up watching a ton of Spongebob, and the question of whether our favorite absorbent, yellow, and porous cartoon character was a dish sponge or a sea sponge was the last thing to cross my mind. Not because I think it’s a stupid question — in fact, I think it’s a deeply important and complex question with far-reaching yet personal implications. No, I never asked that question because I thought it was answered early on in the series’ run, when Spongebob photosynthesizes for nourishment.
