Golf comedies often play off of real-life scenarios and situations for some of their more satirical jokes. Some of the jokes are pretty blatant while others fly under the radar. This is definitely the case in Happy Gilmore when Chubbs is telling Happy that he was no longer allowed to play on the Pro Tour. Happy quips, “Ah, I’m sorry. Because your black?” to which Chubbs responds, “Hell no! Damned alligator bit my hand off!”
A simple line in a movie that may have gone over most people’s heads. Those who know Augusta National and their history know that this is in regard to their HIGHLY controversial regulations that did not allow Black members until 1990.
Now the Masters is upon us and in full swing (pun DEFINITELY intended). Before we crown the next Masters Champion on Sunday, let’s look back at some of the awesome, interesting, and controversial moments in the Masters.
