The situation in Australia is dire. The brushfires sweeping the nation are bigger, hotter, and faster than anything they have seen before. The turbo-charged fires have killed at least two dozen people and a billion animals, not including insects. The number is expected to increase even after the fires have been extinguished, as the greenery the plant-eating animals eat will be completely gone. Ecosystems will be irreparably destroyed. Once thriving species of plants and animals will be added to the endangered list, and as for the ones already on it, this could be the nail in their coffin.
But glimmers of hope peak through the ash. American firefighters have arrived in Australia to help stop the scourge. When they touched down at the Sydney International Airport on January 9, they were greeted with a hero’s welcome.
