Does the city take the shape of an apple when seen from above? The answer is no, so why the reference? Well, a reporter by the name of John Fitz Gerald had overheard a few people talking about heading to New York from New Orleans in the 1920’s. The term they used for it? The Big Apple. While he never did find out why they called it that, he liked the line so much that he started using it whenever he wrote about New York City.
