Texas jailer thanks inmates who broke out of cell to save his life (Video)

Above is the original security footage of inmates saving their jailer’s life during a heart attack. Guard on duty, Gary Grimm slumps in his chair in the bottom right of the footage. Inmates thought he was joking at first, then took action, escaping their cell to alert other deputies.

Grimm was assigned to guard inmates in the basement of the Parker County District Courthouse when he suffered a heart attack. Eight inmates in the holding cell banged on the cage and broke free to try and get help.

“Instead of overtaking me and taking my gun, and killing me or taking a hostage and escaping, they looked at me as a human being,” Grimm said.

He never got a chance to personally thank his saviors because they were transported while he recovered in the hospital. But he said he would be “damn glad to shake their hand.”

“I get emotional. If they wished harm for me, all they had to do was sit there and do nothing,” Grimm said.
After 20 years of service, Grimm medically retired due to his ongoing heart condition. He is scheduled to have open heart surgery this week to install a Left Ventricle Assistant Device.
