Nearly 50 years ago, Zelta Davis had a fascination for whales, so as an anniversary gift, her husband, Hugh, decided to put his hands to work and build one. Taking nearly two years to build, with only the help of one friend for welding purposes, Hugh built the entire thing by hand. Now, what started as an anniversary surprise in 1969 has turned into a national landmark on the historic Route 66 and one of the most well-known monuments in Oklahoma.
Sadly, it was shut down from 1988-1995 after years of vandalism and theft. After opening back up, It has seen better days and is ran solely off donations and what little revenue the small gift shop collects when people come through.
