This is the last installment of a 3-part series I’ve written to celebrate the 10th anniversary of theCHIVE. Moments that would forever define theCHIVE, and no greater moment than the day we met Bill Murray.
Of course we grew up watching Bill Murray’s films. My brother and I were caddies at the Ft. Wayne country club. Bill’s cartoonish portrayal of Carl Spackler, the assistant greenskeeper-turned-Masters Champion, was imminently relatable.
At the end of Caddyshack, Bill would literally blow up the establishment. After four years making $8 for an 18-hole loop, Leo and I thought that was great – we had cultivated a healthy distrust of the establishment. Bill and his brother, Brain Doyle-Murray, who wrote Caddyshack, were both caddies at Indian Creek Country Club. Bill was one of nine kids from a big midwestern family in Wilmette, Illinois, who got out and made it big in Hollywood.
