“It took a few months after Tony’s untimely passing until it really settled. Plain and simple, his writing and travel documentaries where always something I would turn to when I needed a boost. He had a great voice and great sense of humility while traveling, which is something I had to acquire during my mid-twenties while traveling 6 months every year. In essence, he just gave me a sense of peace and a glimpse into so many fascinating places in the world that drew my curiosity.

I chose to “stipple” all the highlights, which means that there are thousands of tiny brushstrokes making up all the values of the portrait. When I was satisfied with the likeness of Mr. Bourdain, I finished the piece with a clear epoxy resin, which just makes the values as true as can be, giving it a ton of contrast while also protecting the paint from dust or damage. The frame I hand painted and is set in the epoxy, so they are bonded for life.”
