Yesterday we posted the story of Lucy Hott. Lucy is an identical twin born with Sacral Agenesis. To put it simply, the bottom of Lucy’s spine is floating. Where our spines are safely connected to the sacrum and tailbone, Lucy is missing parts of both bones.
Lucy’s doctors said she would never walk or run. But her determined spirit and the inseparable bond she shares with her sister, Bonnie-Ray, propel her to live an active and compassionate lifestyle where she volunteers and tries to help anyone in need.
However, Lucy is in pain everyday. She could wake up tomorrow – paralyzed from the waist down. The worst part isn’t the if, but the when that is going to happen.
Chive Charities stepped up with a $10,000 grant for an adaptive tricycle and a service dog that will help her ease the pain and anxiety that is present in her everyday life.
But the Chivers had more in mind. We set a goal of $25,000 to pay next year’s rent on a spacious, handicap accessible home. In true Chive Nation fashion, you guys blew through the goal in two hours flat.
We’re now 24 hours in… and getting close to doubling Lucy’s goal.
I spoke with Carl and Tasha-Kay, Lucy’s parents shortly after the Chivers blasted through the $25,000 goal. As is the case with many of our recipients, they were having trouble comprehending what was going down.
“I don’t know what to say,” Carl said. “This has been a joy. It’s unexpected, it’s incredible, and some people may see the Chive as Internet shenanigans, but… this is real. And this is incredible. Thank you.”
Tasha-Kay, a 5th grade teacher, was unable to check her phone while she tried to teach equations to her math class. She said it was pure agony. “We got through two equations before I finally gave up and we started doing live graphs of the GoFundMe donations.”
The Chivers also chimed in within the comments section as usual.
