The actual point:

“My Sweet Lord” is about George’s search for the reason we’re all hanging out on this planet. It’s partially the meaning of life, whatever this “thing” is to you: love, peace, god, chicken parmesan sandwiches, etc. The song is about this unrelenting search.

The video’s message, however, is that this “thing” isn’t tangible. It can’t be found by searching, praying, singing or doing (unless your thing is the sandwiches, in which case there’s bound to be at least one decent one in every city).

The lyrics in this song are mostly variations of George saying how much he wants to make contact with this “thing.”

We see this search played out in the video. All these people working tirelessly to find it. By the end, we see that not even the best team of the most recognizable faces with the most high-tech equipment can find the “thing.”

It’s not until they stop and rest that they come into contact with something. In a moment of relaxation and music delivered by George, they find it. It has been there the whole time, playing as the soundtrack to the video but also on the movie theatre screen, which Fred Armisen never bothers to look at. George’s son and producer of the video Dhani Harrison tells us that this “thing” is all around us, all you have to do is let it in. It’s peace, it’s love, to some it’s God and to others it’s just a feeling.

We all have the ability to find this “thing” in life, we just need to stop looking so hard. Sit down. Relax. Enjoy our friends, our family, the things that we love. Not such a bad holiday message.

This can all be true, but it doesn’t dismiss the fact that the video kind of sucks.
