Pope Francis is a man revered for many great achievements and warm acts of humanity, and now he can add officiating an impromptu marriage ceremony on a plane to his list. Thursday morning, while flying over Chile on Chilean airline LATAM, flight attendants Carlos Ciuffardi and Paola Podest, a couple of over 10 years who met while working for the airline, tied the knot with the blessings from the holy man himself.
Apparently, the whole scenario started out with a simple question from the Pope who asked the two if they were already married. The couple clarified that they’d been civilly married since 2010, however, hadn’t been properly married in the church yet due to a tragic earthquake that destroyed the church where they planned to wed. Pope Francis then improvised and asked the question if they would like him to marry them right there on the spot…on a plane!
So, mid-flight, the leader of the Catholic Church performed a brief ceremony as an airline executive acted as the official witness and a license was hand-drafted and signed by a Chilean bishop also onboard and the Pope, of course. This marked a historic moment, as there had yet to be a couple ever married by Pope on a plane before. Next time they’ll have to lace the plane with snakes to up the ante once again. In addition to officiating the wedding, Francis also gave them each a wedding gift: a white rosary for the bride, and a black one for the groom.
