Today astronomers released the first ever image of an actual black hole, captured by the National Science Foundation-funded Event Horizon Telescope. The announcement was made during a coordinated press conference across the globe, and it reveals the black hole at the center of Messier 87, a massive galaxy in the nearby Virgo galaxy cluster.
