“I built the Power Wheels Mustang Go-Kart in May with my friend in my garage. The concept was his idea, and I got involved in the project because it sounded like a lot of fun, and I know how to weld and have the tools and skills needed to complete the build. We started with an ugly old go-kart that my friend found online, which had a different engine mounted in the rear, and an excessively heavy roll cage. we shortened the frame by 8 inches, and put the new engine in the front instead of the rear, for better weight distribution. This build took us roughly a week to complete. Total cost for the build was somewhere around $400, since we didn’t pay anything for the engine. The Power Wheels Mustang turned out better and faster than either of us had imagined, and we wanted to see how fast it would go, so we took it to a paved road in the middle of nowhere and did a few top speed and acceleration tests. currently, the top speed we have reached is 72mph, we did 0-60mph in 9.4 seconds, and a quarter mile in 16.44 seconds. With a bit of tuning and a few minor upgrades, we expect significant improvement on all those numbers. The engine for the project we borrowed from my old dirt bike that I haven’t used much lately. It is a Honda CRF230f engine, which is bored out to 240cc with a high-performance cam, putting out an estimated 24hp. It has a 6-speed transmission, for which we made a sequential shift lever like a rally car. I estimate that the car weighs about 200-250 pounds, which gives it a power-to-weight ratio of about .096 to .12 hp per pound.”
